Romantic Florals

In 2013 my husband was laid off from his engineering job and we had some future decisions to make. I had currently been staying home to take care of our two boys whom we also homeschooled. I had a background in advertising, but I didn’t want to return yet to a full-time position away from home. My boys still needed me to be at home and available to them.

My younger sister, a retail florist in DC, had recently closed her full-service shop and transitioned to an in-home studio-based wedding floral business. She encouraged me to open my own home studio. After doing some research and spending time with her, I decided to take the plunge. Why not? I had nothing to lose.

At the time it was purely a business decision based on finding a career that I could do for a long time and that would offer a life-work-balance that I needed.

I never thought that I would fall in love with it.

I wake up thinking about flowers and design and go to bed the same way.  Most of my daily thoughts are consumed with flowers and design. Creativity and pleasing clients.

In the past 7.5 years I have designed over 200 weddings from my little garage studio. I have absolutely loved working with every single couple. I dream about their weddings and they become part of my daily life.  I love being able to take their dreams and make them a reality. It is so fulfilling to create something that gives such a gift of joy and happiness to others. What a true blessing.

Last year I also began freelancing and have been blessed to work with many studios, shops and designers.  I forgot how much I missed working with others. Learning from my peers and being energized with their spirits and talents.

I have been very lucky to have had many educational opportunities. I have attended classes at the Benz School at Texas A+M, Floral Institute in Portland, Floriology and School of Flowers in Houston.

In 2010 I was inducted into the American Institute of Floral Design (AIFD) and this past fall I completed and graduated from the European Master Certification (EMC) program.  I am always looking for new opportunities to learn from others. Life is too short to pass up opportunities that come up.

My boys have grown up in the past 7 years. One is away at TTU in his second year studying Architecture. My younger son is a junior in high school and we are still homeschooling. With his permission and support of my husband I have embarked on a new journey. I recently have paused my studio business to work as a full-time designer at The Flower Studio, Austin.

A month in and I’m surviving and thriving. I love the daily challenges and grueling work schedule. Every day brings a new adventure and project. Sometimes, I do miss working in my little studio and on my days off I am in there creating and designing. It is the best of both worlds.  Life is a journey and it’s not a straight path. I feel so blessed to have found a career purpose that brings not only myself joy and fulfillment but also to those around me. I look forward to many more years in floristry. The future is bright and big. I wake up and pinch myself every day and think about how lucky I am.
